After 3 days of preparation in the LaCala Resort that saw different approaches of the 10 contenders which parts of the game to focus on in practice – maximize time on the course to build up playing confidence, optimizing the recovery time by sleep in as long as possible, relaxing mind and muscles with a few extra Gin&Tonics, using the afternoons to make a strategic gameplan for the different courses – it was time to get the GinCup2020 on the way…
No other venue than the host of the Volvo World Matchplay Championship FINCA CORTESIN was the stage of the first of three days in the GinCup2020. While thunderstorms interfered with the start of play and especially with the nerves of the reigning Onion Bob, tension started to build up quickly. Off to the worst start was the Captain who managed it to lose 5 balls in the first two holes that left him doubting how to survive the day. A few holes later it hit the Champ PJ who was tied for the lead as the shanks found him. Shanking back to back tee shots leaving him head shaking before recovering eventually. After an average performance in the 2019 edition of the GinCup the scores saw Pete rising back to old strength. 4 over par after the front nine he carried his lead all 18 holes to gain the lead after day 1. But even all his experience couldn’t prevent him from an incident late into the round. Somehow the irish veteran and Mulles, the giant from Reckange reached into the others bag and played their next shot with the golfclub of their buggy partner – Leading into a loss of hole. Other members claim this incident didn’t come as a surprise as “they are anyways not the smartest cookies under the sun.” The Rookies introduced themselves with a solid performance. Robert could collect his first few points in the GinCup and Bigi proved that his good form of the last days was not a one time wonder. Another 3 digit performance left Bob in the unpopular last place after day 1 while the leaders are the former champions Pete and PJ. After a few Gins and a good night of sleep the members will attack the Green of SOTOGRANDE La Reserva on day 2.
